Is gastrointestinal bleeding caused by liver cancer serious?
Disease description:
My grandfather has liver cancer and has recently started experiencing gastrointestinal bleeding. I’m unsure how serious this is—how serious is gastrointestinal bleeding caused by liver cancer?
Gastrointestinal bleeding caused by hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) can be severe. The occurrence of gastrointestinal bleeding in HCC patients often indicates advanced-stage disease. Such bleeding may result from HCC-related complications—most commonly cirrhosis. Cirrhosis can lead to esophageal and gastric varices as well as portal hypertensive gastropathy. In daily life, consuming hard or coarse foods may rupture fragile gastric blood vessels, thereby triggering gastrointestinal bleeding.
