Can patients with diabetes and hypertension consume black rice porridge?
Disease description:
My elderly family member was recently diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension. I’m considering purchasing black rice powder as a breakfast drink—may patients with diabetes and hypertension consume black rice powder?
Patients with diabetes and hypertension may consume black rice porridge, but only in moderation. Black rice porridge contains anthocyanins, which exert antioxidant effects; flavonoids, which help prevent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases; and dietary fiber, which promotes gastrointestinal motility. However, black rice porridge is readily absorbed and has a relatively high glycemic index; thus, it is unsuitable for excessive consumption by individuals with diabetes. Patients with poorly controlled blood glucose levels should further restrict their intake.
