The therapeutic effects of drinking Ophiopogon japonicus (Maidong) steeped in water are equivalent to those of taking it as a decoction. Maidong is classified as a tonic herb that replenishes deficiency, generates the pulse, and clears heart fire; it nourishes yin, promotes fluid production, moistens the lungs, and clears the heart. It is commonly used for individuals with yin-fluid deficiency. However, due to individual differences in constitution and variations in the affected organ systems, clinical manifestations (syndromes) may differ. - For stomach yin deficiency, Maidong steeped in water may be combined with Rehmannia glutinosa (Shengdi) and Polygonatum odoratum (Yuzhu). - For lung yin deficiency, Maidong steeped in water may be combined with Schisandra chinensis (Wuweizi) and Lilium brownii (Baihe). - For heart yin deficiency, it may be combined with Nelumbo nucifera seeds (Lianzi), Ziziphus jujuba seeds (Suanzaoren), and Platycladus orientalis seeds (Baiziren).
