Disease description:

I’ve been experiencing “internal heat” recently, accompanied by mild pharyngitis, but I’d prefer not to take medication. At home, my family prepared a decoction using Scrophularia ningpoensis (Xuan Shen) and Platycodon grandiflorus (Jie Geng). Could you please explain the combined therapeutic effects and potential side effects of these two herbs?

Dr. He Haochen
Platycodon-Scrophularia Decoction exerts effects such as detoxification, clearing heat, relieving sore throat, and promoting lung function to alleviate cough. Its composition includes Platycodon root (Jiegeng), Scrophularia root (Xuanshen), and Licorice root (Gancao). It is indicated for pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and other conditions caused by excessive internal heat or hyperactivity of lung- and stomach-fire. Clinical pharmacological studies demonstrate its potent antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. Specifically, Platycodon root facilitates the upward transport of medicinal components and promotes lung dispersion while clearing heat; Scrophularia root clears heat, cools blood, detoxifies, and disperses nodules; and Licorice root harmonizes the actions of other herbs, clears heat and detoxifies, tonifies the spleen and stomach, and alleviates spasms and pain. Caution is advised when administering this formula to individuals with spleen deficiency accompanied by loose stools or to elderly, physically frail patients. It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its components. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health!
