Does the imaging examination cause pain?
Disease description:
I previously experienced an ectopic pregnancy. I am now trying to conceive, and my doctor has recommended a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) to evaluate my fallopian tubes. Could you please tell me whether the HSG procedure is painful?
Whether a contrast imaging procedure is painful depends on the body part being examined and the individual’s pain sensitivity. Generally, for gastrointestinal contrast studies, patients are required to drink a barium suspension, which typically causes no pain. In contrast, hysterosalpingography (HSG) may cause some discomfort; severe pain usually indicates severe tubal adhesions. Additionally, for urographic procedures involving needle puncture, mild pain may be felt at the puncture site.
