Mupirocin ointment can be used to treat paronychia. It is effective against infections caused by Gram-positive cocci. Paronychia often results from bacterial infection following trauma-induced damage to the nail fold; in such cases, topical application of mupirocin ointment helps control inflammation. Alternatively, tetracycline ointment or Bactroban (also containing mupirocin) may also be applied topically to the affected area for anti-inflammatory effects.
