Why does pressing on the fingernail cause pain?
Disease description:
A friend trimmed my fingernails a few days ago, and today my fingernails hurt when pressed. What could be causing this pain upon pressure?
Pain in the fingernail upon gentle pressure may be caused by an ingrown nail or paronychia. An ingrown nail occurs when the nail edge grows into the surrounding soft tissue. If there is no redness, swelling, or discharge, the pain typically subsides as the nail grows upward. However, if significant redness, swelling, or discharge is present, partial surgical removal of the nail may be performed under a physician’s guidance. If the condition is due to paronychia, topical antibiotic ointment and oral antibiotics may be prescribed under medical supervision.
