What Is Acanthosis Nigricans?
Disease description:
My skin color is gradually darkening; my colleagues say it’s acanthosis nigricans. What exactly is acanthosis nigricans?
Acanthosis nigricans is a condition characterized by velvety, hyperpigmented, and thickened skin with a papillomatous surface. Treatment of acanthosis nigricans varies depending on its underlying cause and may include pharmacotherapy. Etiologic treatment focuses on eliminating the underlying cause. If malignancy is responsible, surgical resection of the tumor is recommended. Once the causative factor has been addressed, adjunctive topical therapies—such as calcipotriol ointment or tretinoin cream—may be used under a physician’s guidance.
