What is Acute Fatty Liver of Pregnancy (AFLP)?
Disease description:
I am approximately eight months pregnant, and during a hospital examination, I was diagnosed with pregnancy-related fatty liver disease. What is pregnancy-related fatty liver disease?
Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) refers primarily to hepatic dysfunction leading to fatty liver disease in pregnant women, most commonly occurring during the third trimester—particularly around weeks 30–36 of gestation—when its incidence is relatively high. AFLP is classified as a severe form of hepatitis and carries a significant mortality risk for the mother; it also poses substantial risks to the fetus. The pathogenesis of this condition is mainly attributed to hormonal fluctuations in late pregnancy, especially excessive estrogen secretion, which promotes abnormal accumulation of fat within hepatocytes, ultimately resulting in hepatocellular injury.
