Dr. Gan Liqiang
Skin disorders caused by blood heat include psoriasis, eczema, pityriasis rosea, and neurodermatitis. In clinical treatment, the Liang Xue Huo Xue Tang (Cooling-Blood and Invigorating-Blood Decoction) consists of Salvia miltiorrhiza, Paeonia lactiflora var. rubra, Spatholobus suberectus, Rehmannia glutinosa (fresh), Sophora japonica flower buds, and Lithospermum erythrorhizon. Concurrently, fresh Portulaca oleracea, Lonicera japonica, and Phellodendron amurense may be applied externally as a decoction for wet compresses. Characteristic features of these skin disorders include bright-red maculopapular rashes, often accompanied by dry mouth and thirst, scanty dark-yellow urine, constipation, a red tongue with yellow coating, and a slippery pulse. During treatment of blood-heat-induced dermatoses, clinicians must closely monitor changes in the patient’s symptoms. If the rash color deepens and symptoms alleviate or resolve, treatment should be promptly discontinued.
