What causes unexplained pain in the entire fingernail?
Disease description:
Recently, for the past few days, I’ve been experiencing pain across the entire nail plate—but what could be causing unexplained pain throughout the entire nail?
Unexplained pain affecting the entire nail plate is commonly caused by paronychia or trauma. Most patients suffer from paronychia, primarily triggered by minor injuries around the nail or ingrown toenails, followed by infection with pathogenic microorganisms—typically resulting in localized redness and swelling. Pain may also stem from trauma—for instance, if a finger is caught in a door or subjected to external compression, which can easily injure the nail. Such injuries commonly manifest as swelling, pain, and congestion.
