Why does the skin around my toenails often hurt?
Disease description:
Over the past two days, the skin beside my toenail has been painful while walking. Why does the skin adjacent to the toenail frequently hurt?
Pain around the toenails is commonly caused by ingrown toenails or paronychia. An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail is trimmed too short; as it grows, the edge may penetrate the surrounding nail fold (nail groove), resulting in significant pain. If ingrown toenails or paronychia are left untreated, or if there are hangnails or minor injuries near the nail, secondary infection of the nail fold may develop, leading to pain. Patients are advised to seek prompt evaluation and treatment at the general surgery department of a hospital and to maintain good local hygiene.
