Can iodophor be used for mosquito bites that have broken the skin?
Disease description:
I was just bitten by a mosquito and then scratched the area until the skin broke. I’d like to apply iodophor topically—can iodophor be used on broken skin caused by insect bites?
Iodophor should not be used for mosquito bites. Iodophor is a commonly used clinical disinfectant with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects on the skin, primarily indicated for skin injuries and infections. When a mosquito bites, its proboscis pierces the skin, triggering a localized allergic reaction clinically characterized by erythema, swelling, and pruritus. Symptomatic treatment is generally recommended—for example, using menthol calamine lotion, stemonae tincture, or wuji ointment—to alleviate allergic reactions and itching, as well as to exert antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. Mosquito bites may easily lead to secondary infection due to local pruritus and subsequent scratching; therefore, prompt and active treatment is essential.
