Why does the skin on the lower legs resemble fish scales?
Disease description:
Recently, the skin on my legs has become scaly, resembling fish scales. Why does the skin on the lower legs appear scaly like fish scales?
Scaly skin on the lower legs is typically caused by ichthyosis. Clinically, ichthyosis commonly manifests as dry skin on the lower legs and extremities, with fine white or grayish scales covering the surface; affected areas also exhibit reduced sweating and sebum production. Symptoms often worsen during autumn and winter, while warmer, more humid conditions in spring and summer tend to alleviate them. Ichthyosis is predominantly inherited. Treatment generally involves topical application—under a physician’s guidance—of creams such as lactic acid ointment, tannic acid ointment, or salicylic acid ointment.
