What tests are performed for lumbar disc herniation?
Disease description:
For lumbar disc herniation, the following evaluations are recommended:
- Visit the hospital’s spinal surgery department for a CT scan.
- Lumbar disc herniation is typically caused by external force compressing the intervertebral disc, leading to protrusion and subsequent irritation of the nerve roots, which results in pain.
- Consult a neurosurgeon and undergo evaluation using neurosurgical diagnostic software.
- Perform magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the intervertebral discs, as MRI provides superior soft-tissue resolution compared with CT.
- A physical examination by an orthopedic surgeon is also advised to confirm the diagnosis. Based on clinical findings, further imaging studies—such as X-ray or CT—may be considered.
