Can lumbar disc herniation cause generalized pruritus (itching)?
Disease description:
Lumbar disc herniation rarely causes generalized pruritus (whole-body itching). When itching is the predominant symptom, drug allergy should be primarily considered. Currently, there are no medications that can cure lumbar disc herniation; pharmacological treatment is only intended to assist in management and alleviate symptoms. Recommended non-pharmacological treatments include rest, traction, and massage. At present, discontinuation of medication should be considered. If the itching resolves rapidly after stopping the drug, it likely indicates a drug-related reaction. However, if itching persists despite discontinuation, a medical evaluation is necessary to rule out other potential causes of cutaneous allergy. Importantly, lumbar disc herniation itself does not cause generalized pruritus; systemic itching is more likely attributable to allergic skin reactions.
