Brisk walking offers no benefit for patients with lumbar disc herniation. Prolonged walking is not advisable; instead, activity should be reasonably scheduled. In the early stages of lumbar disc herniation, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapy—including topical herbal preparations—may be considered. Avoid maintaining any single posture for extended periods and refrain from physically demanding labor. Regular massage therapy and application of traditional black plasters—such as Shaolin Black Plaster—to dispel cold and dampness are recommended. Self-directed exercise, such as practicing the health-promoting “Seven-Section Brocade” (Qigong), may also be beneficial. Lumbar disc herniation commonly results from improper sitting posture, prolonged sitting, or excessive physical strain. Patients often experience sudden onset of low back pain and discomfort. Recommended interventions include backward walking exercises, sleeping on a firm mattress, appropriate rest, and avoidance of overexertion. Timely TCM treatment—including herbal therapy or traction—should be initiated. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary.
