What is disuse osteoporosis following tibiofibular fracture?
Disease description:
Disuse osteoporosis is a common complication following plaster immobilization for tibiofibular fractures. During the period of plaster immobilization, lack of active movement results in the absence of mechanical loading on the tibia, fibula, and foot bones. This leads to loss of bone minerals, trabecular thinning, and ultimately osteoporosis. Typically, this condition resolves spontaneously after the patient resumes ambulation in the later stages of recovery.
