Can lupus cause osteoporosis?
Disease description:
Osteoporosis can occur naturally with aging. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may also lead to osteoporosis due to the underlying autoimmune disease’s impact on the skeletal system. Furthermore, glucocorticoid therapy—commonly used in the management of SLE—can further contribute to osteoporosis. Based on your condition, the likelihood of osteoporosis is relatively high. Therefore, we recommend regular calcium supplementation and pharmacologic treatment with bone-strengthening agents.
