How long after HIV infection can it be detected?

Disease description:

I had an HIV test at the hospital a few days ago, and the result was negative. However, I’m still somewhat anxious—could it be that the test was performed too early? How long after potential HIV exposure can the infection be reliably detected?

The time required to detect HIV infection depends on the testing method used. Generally, after a high-risk exposure, HIV enters the body and begins rapid replication within 1–2 weeks. However, it typically takes about 4 weeks for the body to produce sufficient antibodies to be detected. Therefore, antibody-based tests can usually detect HIV infection within approximately 4–6 weeks after exposure.
