Disease description:

When taking my child for vaccinations, I often see distinctions made between inactivated vaccines and recombinant vaccines, but I’m unsure which vaccines administered to my child are inactivated. Could you please clarify which vaccines are classified as inactivated vaccines?

Dr. Jiang Weimin
Inactivated vaccines are produced by cultivating viruses or bacteria and then using chemical or physical methods to inactivate the pathogens—rendering them non-infectious while preserving their immunogenicity. Currently, commonly used inactivated vaccines for children include the diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTaP) vaccine, influenza vaccine, hepatitis A vaccine, meningococcal vaccine, Japanese encephalitis vaccine, pentavalent vaccine, and inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV).
