Disease description:

My friend has recently been experiencing persistent fever and night sweats, and is increasingly concerned that these symptoms may be caused by HIV infection. Can HIV infection be detected during the latent (asymptomatic) phase?

Dr. Jiang Weimin
HIV infection during the latent period is typically detectable. AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is an immune-deficiency disease caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. During the latent phase, the body produces HIV antibodies, which can be detected via blood tests or nucleic acid testing for HIV. Early detection and prompt treatment of HIV infection are strongly recommended; delayed treatment may lead to complications such as malignancies or opportunistic infections.
