My neighbor measured his blood glucose at home yesterday. When I visited him, he also tested my blood glucose. I’d like to know whether the lancet used for blood glucose testing can transmit HIV.

Generally, blood glucose lancets are not reused, and proper use poses no risk of HIV infection. However, sharing lancets among multiple people increases the risk of HIV transmission—especially if a lancet previously used by an HIV-positive individual is reused, as this can lead to infection. Since HIV is transmitted through blood, lancets used by individuals with HIV may carry the virus. Therefore, even for home blood glucose monitoring, it is best to use disposable lancets.
