Can sleep deprivation cause palpitations?
Disease description:
I’ve been experiencing insufficient sleep recently and frequently staying up late. I’ve also had occasional palpitations and a feeling of heart fluttering. Could inadequate sleep cause palpitations?
Sleep deprivation may cause palpitations. Insufficient sleep can lead to inadequate coronary blood supply, impairing cardiac function and thereby triggering palpitations. It may also cause abnormal sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity, resulting in tachycardia and increased myocardial contractility, which can likewise induce palpitations. Furthermore, sleep deprivation may contribute to certain cardiac conditions—such as premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) or myocardial infarction—that manifest with palpitations.
