Disease description:

My daughter frequently zones out and experiences whole-body twitching. I’m worried it might be epilepsy, but my husband thinks it could be caused by tic disorder. What are the differences between pediatric epilepsy and tic disorder?

Key differences between pediatric epilepsy and tic disorders include the following: 1. During an epileptic seizure, the child loses consciousness entirely, whereas during a tic episode, the child remains fully conscious. 2. Epileptic seizures occur suddenly and typically require oral antiepileptic medication for control; in contrast, tics are involuntary movements (e.g., as seen in tic disorders) and often do not require pharmacological treatment. Additionally, electroencephalography (EEG) in children with epilepsy usually reveals abnormal electrical discharges in the brain, whereas EEG findings in tic disorders are normal, with no evidence of abnormal discharges.
