How is chronic inflammation of the rectal mucosa treated?
Disease description:
Recently, I’ve frequently experienced abdominal distension, abdominal pain, and increased bowel movements. After visiting the hospital for evaluation, I was diagnosed with proctitis. How is inflammatory disease of the rectal mucosa treated?
Rectal mucosal inflammation is known as proctitis. First, dietary management is recommended—maintaining a balanced diet while avoiding spicy, irritating, and greasy foods. Second, pharmacological treatment may be employed: if the condition results from intestinal dysbiosis, oral agents to restore gut microbiota balance should be administered; if caused by inflammation, anti-inflammatory therapy is indicated, and antibiotics should be selected based on antimicrobial susceptibility testing when necessary. Additionally, for cases triggered by viral infection, timely antiviral and/or antifungal therapy is required.
