How long can scabies mites survive?
Disease description:
I went swimming last weekend and discovered I had scabies upon returning home. I’m worried about infecting my family—how long can scabies mites survive?
Scabies mites can survive for approximately one week and remain capable of laying eggs in natural environments with temperatures ranging from 15–31°C. Their eggs can remain viable for about 7–10 days. Both scabies mite eggs and adult mites can detach from the human body and adhere to clothing and other items. Once off the human host, adult mites typically survive for about 2–3 days. Eggs hatch into adult mites in approximately two weeks. At high temperatures—around 50°C—scabies mites die within approximately 10 minutes.
