Does going past the due date affect the fetus?

If delivery has not occurred by the estimated due date, placental aging and reduced amniotic fluid volume may develop, potentially leading to fetal distress in utero and adversely affecting fetal health. However, if only a few days have passed beyond the due date, there is generally no cause for excessive concern; maintaining a positive mood and engaging in appropriate physical activity while awaiting spontaneous labor is usually sufficient. If, however, the due date is exceeded by one week, hospital evaluation is necessary, and induction of labor or cesarean delivery may be required to terminate the pregnancy.
