What should I do about onychomycosis (gray nail)?
Disease description:
I have developed toenail fungus on several of my toes—it looks unsightly, and it’s difficult to trim the nails. What should I do about toenail fungus?
Onychomycosis (gray nail) is primarily treated with medications. Topical antifungal agents—such as 5% amorolfine nail lacquer—may be applied as prescribed by a physician. In more severe cases, oral antifungal therapy may be added, including itraconazole or terbinafine, taken strictly according to medical instructions. Alternative treatments—such as laser therapy and photodynamic therapy—are also available, though their efficacy is generally inferior to that of pharmacological treatment. After developing onychomycosis, it is important to change shoes frequently and wash socks regularly.
