What Causes Itchy Skin?

Itching of the body may result from dry skin, allergic reactions, or other causes. During periods of low ambient humidity, the body tends to lose significant amounts of water, and failure to replenish fluids promptly can lead to dry skin and subsequent pruritus (itching). In mild cases, increasing fluid intake and enhancing skincare measures may effectively alleviate the itching. Additionally, accidental contact with allergens in daily life can also trigger pruritus. Under a physician’s guidance, pharmacologic treatment—such as calamine lotion, loratadine tablets, or chlorpheniramine tablets—may be prescribed.
