Can pregnant women with high blood sugar also take levothyroxine sodium tablets?
Disease description:
My best friend is pregnant, but she has a thyroid condition. She wants to know whether she can take levothyroxine sodium tablets if her blood glucose levels are high during pregnancy.
Pregnant women with high blood glucose levels can generally take levothyroxine sodium (e.g., Synthroid). Oral administration of levothyroxine sodium during pregnancy helps supplement the body’s required thyroid hormone and does not elevate blood glucose levels. Levothyroxine sodium is used to treat hypothyroidism and other thyroid disorders during pregnancy. If blood glucose levels are elevated during pregnancy, it is advisable to limit intake of high-sugar foods.
