Can pregnant women with high blood sugar eat cold-mixed mint leaves?

Disease description:

I am five months pregnant and have elevated blood sugar levels. Recently, I’ve been experiencing “internal heat” (a traditional Chinese medicine concept) and would like to eat cold-mixed mint leaves more often. Is it safe for a pregnant woman with high blood sugar to consume cold-mixed mint leaves?

Dr. Pan Yongyuan
Pregnant women with high blood sugar may consume cold-mixed mint leaves, but only in moderation. Mint leaves are low in both sugar and calories. They possess properties that clear heat, reduce internal fire, exert anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, soothe the liver and relieve depression, stimulate appetite, and aid digestion. Thus, cold-mixed mint leaves are generally acceptable for pregnant women with elevated blood glucose levels—however, minimal oil should be used in preparation. Nevertheless, excessive consumption should be avoided, as mint leaves are considered “cool” (yin) in nature; overconsumption may trigger uterine contractions and, in severe cases, lead to miscarriage or preterm labor.
