Can patients with hypertension and high blood glucose take diuretics?
Disease description:
My blood pressure and blood sugar are both elevated. My doctor prescribed a diuretic antihypertensive medication. I would like to know whether it is safe to take diuretic antihypertensive drugs when blood sugar is high.
Patients with hypertension and elevated blood glucose should generally avoid diuretics, as these agents may further increase blood glucose levels. Diuretics can induce electrolyte imbalances—particularly hypokalemia—as well as hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia. In patients with diabetes, long-term diuretic use may exacerbate abnormalities in lipid metabolism, glucose metabolism, and uric acid metabolism, and may also worsen metabolic syndrome and other metabolic disorders.
