What Causes White Spots at the Base of the Nails?
Disease description:
Many white spots have suddenly appeared near the base of my fingernails these days, and I’m quite anxious. Could you please tell me: What causes white spots to appear near the nail bed?
White spots at the base of the nails can have multiple causes. First, onychomycosis—commonly known as “gray nail”—should be considered; this condition is primarily caused by fungal infection. Second, leukonychia (white nails) may be responsible; this is typically associated with vitamin deficiencies in the patient and can be confirmed via blood tests. Other systemic diseases—including glomerulonephritis, chilblains, and leprosy—may also cause such spots, though these are relatively rare.
