If a patient exhibits symptoms of hyperglycemia, oral metformin may be administered. This medication lowers glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) by inhibiting hepatic glucose production and enhancing peripheral glucose uptake. In obese patients, metformin improves insulin resistance, increases insulin sensitivity, and promotes weight loss.
