Facial pain and difficulty opening the mouth may be symptoms following a mumps outbreak. Mumps occurs when the mumps virus—present in the external environment—invades and irritates the cells and tissues of the parotid glands, triggering inflammation. The mumps virus affects the parotid glands, leading to swelling of the glands, facial pain, and trismus (difficulty opening the mouth).
