Is a ureteral stent placed during flexible ureteroscopy for kidney stones?
Disease description:
My kidneys feel uncomfortable; tests revealed kidney stones, and I subsequently underwent surgery. Is a stent placed during flexible ureteroscopy for kidney stone removal?
Ureteroscopy for kidney stones typically requires the placement of a ureteral stent. Without stent placement following ureteroscopic kidney stone surgery, patients are at increased risk of local adhesions, congestion, or ureteral stricture—conditions that may adversely affect health. Therefore, a stent is routinely placed postoperatively to dilate the ureter, prevent local spasm, and improve surgical success rates. During the stent indwelling period, proper local care is essential to prevent infection and support optimal recovery.
