Is it normal for the scrotum to peel after using sulfur and borax ointment?
Disease description:
Mild inflammation has appeared in the scrotal area. Subsequently, sulfur and borax ointment was used for treatment, but peeling occurred. Is it normal for sulfur and borax ointment to cause peeling of the scrotal skin?
It is, to a certain extent, normal to experience peeling of the scrotal skin after using sulfur and borax ointment. This is primarily because sulfur—a key ingredient in the ointment—exerts antibacterial and antipruritic effects but can also cause skin dryness, potentially leading to desquamation of the stratum corneum in the scrotal area. Additionally, excessive dosage or prolonged continuous use of the ointment may increase the risk of skin irritation and dryness, thereby exacerbating the peeling. It is recommended to discontinue the medication and observe for a period; typically, the peeling resolves spontaneously. If symptoms persist or worsen, prompt medical consultation is advised.
