Acanthosis nigricans is often self-limiting; however, exceptions exist—such as cases caused by underlying conditions like diabetes mellitus or endocrine disorders—which typically do not resolve spontaneously without treatment. If acanthosis nigricans results from severe obesity, the condition may gradually improve—or even resolve spontaneously—once body weight is reduced to a normal range. Therefore, identifying the underlying cause is the first step in managing this condition, followed by targeted, etiology-specific treatment.
