If balanitis is caused by a fungal infection, clotrimazole cream (e.g., Canesten) may be used. Fungal balanoposthitis is primarily characterized by erythema and swelling of the glans penis and prepuce, discharge from the glans, pruritus of the glans, and white membranous or curd-like deposits on the glans surface. If the condition results from a bacterial infection and bacitracin ointment proves ineffective, erythromycin ointment or chlortetracycline (aureomycin) ointment may be applied topically to the glans for therapeutic effect.
