Recurrent oral ulcers in children are associated with factors such as vitamin C deficiency, excessive internal heat (“shang huo”), and tic disorders. If a child is a picky eater and avoids green vegetables and fruits, this may lead to oral ulcers. Excess heat accumulating in the heart and liver—or generalized internal heat—can also cause sores on the tongue and mouth, resulting in oral ulcers. In cases of tic disorders, children may exhibit involuntary, whole-body tics; spasms and contractions of the masticatory muscles (e.g., masseter) can cause the teeth to inadvertently lacerate the oral mucosa, leading to ulcer formation.
