A bitter taste in the mouth and halitosis (bad breath) are associated with oral diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, and excessive liver fire. For instance, oral conditions such as gingivitis, periodontitis, and dental caries promote bacterial growth; these bacteria ferment within the oral cavity, producing unpleasant odors. Gastrointestinal disorders—including *Helicobacter pylori* infection, gastric ulcers, and functional gastrointestinal disturbances—can cause food stagnation and decay, fostering bacterial proliferation and resulting in halitosis; they may also induce a bitter, dry sensation in the mouth. Excessive liver fire depletes body fluids, reducing salivary secretion. This leads to oral dryness and a bitter taste, while diminished saliva further facilitates bacterial overgrowth and subsequent odor production, contributing to halitosis.
