The most accurate method for self-assessing halitosis is as follows: After fasting for 12 hours, gently scrape the back of the tongue with a plastic spoon; then immediately smell the spoon to detect any odor. Alternatively, cup both hands over your mouth and nose and exhale into them, then smell the exhaled air. Another option is to lick the inside of your wrist, wait for the saliva to evaporate, and then smell the area—if an unpleasant odor is present, it may indicate halitosis.
