What Should I Do If My Baby’s Hard Palate Appears White?
Disease description:
The baby is over five months old. Recently, I noticed that the baby’s hard palate turns white after feeding. What should be done about the baby’s whitened hard palate?
The causes of whitening on a baby’s hard palate vary, and thus the appropriate management approaches differ accordingly. If the whitening is due to residual milk left on the hard palate after feeding, gently cleaning the oral cavity or offering the baby some water may help resolve the discoloration. If the whitening results from a Candida (yeast) infection, under a physician’s guidance, you may prepare a properly diluted sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) solution for gentle wiping of the affected area. Alternatively, you may use alkaline mineral water—soak a piece of gauze in it and gently wipe the baby’s hard palate.
