I’m four months pregnant, and I’ve noticed blood in my stool over the past two days. Could this be caused by hemorrhoids? What causes rectal bleeding during pregnancy?

Rectal bleeding during pregnancy is commonly caused by hemorrhoids, anal fissures, rectal prolapse, anal fistulas, or intestinal polyps. During pregnancy, women typically become less physically active, and as the fetus grows, intra-abdominal pressure progressively increases—this may trigger or exacerbate hemorrhoids, leading to rectal bleeding. Anal fissures, rectal prolapse, and anal fistulas—conditions falling under colorectal surgery—can also present with rectal bleeding. Intestinal polyps may cause mucosal injury and subsequent bleeding. To determine the precise cause of rectal bleeding, appropriate diagnostic evaluations are required.
