Disease description:

I’ve suddenly started experiencing pain in my upper back—specifically around the scapular region—but I’m unsure of the cause. Could it be related to another underlying condition? Could you please explain the possible causes of pain in the area of the shoulder blades?

This may be caused by prolonged muscle spasm and resultant deformity, often due to localized overuse injury or inflammation of the scapular tissues—most commonly, thoracic fasciitis. Prolonged poor posture or excessive physical strain can lead to significant pain or restricted mobility of the scapula. Symptoms can be alleviated through acupuncture, physical therapy, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Affected muscles include those anterior to the scapula, in the thoracic cavity, posterior to the ribs, and the intercostal muscles.
