Disease description:

I’ve had mouth pain for some time. I’ve had similar episodes before, but they usually resolved within a few days. This time, however, the symptoms have persisted. Someone mentioned that metronidazole might help—can metronidazole gel or ointment be applied topically to treat oral ulcers?

Metronidazole should not be applied topically to oral ulcers. Metronidazole is primarily used to treat anaerobic bacterial infections and can help alleviate symptoms such as toothache and pericoronitis (inflammation around impacted wisdom teeth), but it has no significant therapeutic effect on oral ulcers. For oral ulcers, patients may use medications such as chlorhexidine solution, potassium permanganate solution, or tetracycline solution. Additionally, maintaining regular dietary habits and ensuring adequate sleep are recommended.
