Disease description:

It might be due to excessive sugar intake—lately, I’ve had toothache every day, and the pain in my left tooth is radiating to my cheek. What should I do?

Toothache and pain in the cheek area are primarily caused by dental caries that have not been treated promptly, leading to purulent necrosis of the dental pulp nerve and subsequently resulting in apical periodontitis. Toothache is often associated with “excess heat” (a traditional Chinese medicine concept), and oral anti-inflammatory and analgesic medications—such as antibiotics—may be used. For severe toothache, oral anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed along with a small dose of sodium bicarbonate solution to alkalinize the oral environment; metronidazole may also be administered orally to prevent anaerobic bacterial infection.
