How is L5-S1 intervertebral disc herniation treated?
Disease description:
Recently, Dad mentioned experiencing lower back pain. After a hospital examination, he was diagnosed with a lumbar 5–sacral 1 (L5–S1) intervertebral disc herniation. I’m very concerned—how is an L5–S1 disc herniation treated?
Treatment for this condition varies depending on disease severity. In mild cases, pharmacotherapy combined with appropriate physical exercise is typically sufficient. For more severe cases, surgical intervention is required. Pelvic traction may be performed to widen the intervertebral space, thereby facilitating disc rehydration and relieving pressure on the nerve roots. Adjunctive physical therapy and massage can aid recovery. However, if conservative treatment fails or the condition progressively worsens, surgical treatment is strongly recommended.
