Disease description:

My wife was found to have a uterine fibroid during a routine physical examination. She currently has no symptoms, and her doctor recommended watchful waiting. I’d like to know: Do uterine fibroids absorb nutrients from the body?

Uterine fibroids consume the body’s nutrients because they gradually grow and require nutrients from the body to sustain their growth. Therefore, when uterine fibroids rapidly enlarge over a short period and cause associated symptoms, timely surgical removal is necessary to prevent compression of surrounding normal tissues and to avoid impairment of fertility. Currently, laparoscopic myomectomy is an available option for removing uterine fibroids. If the fibroids are large and the patient has no desire for future childbearing, hysterectomy may be considered.
